What are Simulations?

The simulations FSL is able to supply are Real-time, process-dynamic
simulations designed for actual operating plants in the North Sea
and UK. The Oil and Gas industry uses simulations to develop control
room operators' key skills and test the operators' response to emergency
situations. The instructor can also demonstrate "what happens
if?" scenarios and have active participation of the group.
What are the Advantages of Generic Simulations?
Simulation is an excellent training tool to provide repeatability
for the following training situations:
Plant Optimisation
Instrument
tuning
Start-Up &
Shutdown
Troubleshooting
Emergency
training
Faultfinding
The simulations are also approved internationally as tools for assessing
and proving levels of competence.
How do the Simulations Prove Levels of Competence?
The simulations prove levels of competence by using the training
exercises supplied with the simulation package or by having an inbuilt
Event Logger. The Event Logger records either on a dot matrix printer
or computer every action taken by the operator or any changes to
the process. This includes alarms, valve changes, control parameter
adjustments etc.
Site Specific Simulations
FSL through its supplier TSC can provide the customer with site-specific
simulations. The simulations are designed around the actual operating
plant and can have historical faults built into them for the instructor
to use when required. The client can specify the in-built faults
at the start of the simulation design process. The information required
is as follows:
Control Philosophy
P&IDs
Cause and
Effect Charts
Vendor Information
Pipe Sizes
Construction
Material
Operating
Philosophy
Control Systems
Flow and Components
Valving Arrangements
Job Descriptions
Safety Philosophy
ESD and Interlocks
Start-up Procedures
Shutdown Procedures
This information ensures that the simulation is as close to the
actual plant as is mathematically possible. A full back-up service
is provided by FSL via TSC.
